6th Springfield Stop -- Drury Stone Chapel

Stone Chapel is Springfield's oldest stone structure. It was built in 1876, destroyed by fire in 1882 and rebuilt by 1892.

It is a landmark and Springfield treasure.

It looks like a very pretty place! I've driven by it thousands of times and I've never been inside. Can you believe it?

It is a beautiful building. I have only been inside a handful of times for concerts and convocations, but I like to admire it from the outside. I had a favorite tree there, a Bradford pear that I would climb up sometimes to read or relax and contemplate life from a different perspective (literally!). Unfortunately, the tree lost so many limbs in the 2007 ice storm that it is now almost dead; it has been walled off by bricks and mulch. I should visit the chapel more often. It's not the same without my favorite perch, but maybe I could find another one or (gasp!) use the benches.

Amanda, you have to go inside. It is beautiful.

Amy, your tree sounds wonderful! Sitting in a tree is something that I think everyone should do every now and then.

I love Stone Chapel! It's so beautiful..I actually had a friend that got married there right after it was remodeled. Interesting story...I didn't know until last spring when Singers were involved in rededicating the Chapel but...it isn't named Stone Chapel because it's made of stone. It was just coincidence that the family's name was Stone.

Mel - I love Stone Chapel. Wish I had gotten married there. Maybe next time (just kidding). Our son was married there and it was wonderful. His wedding was before the remodeling.

Stone Chapel is SO pretty! I can't wait to have my wedding there. All of the beautiful stained glass will help save $ on decorations!
